Renting in Amsterdam: what to know before you sign

· 4 min read

Amsterdam's rental market moves fast, so have your documents ready: ID, proof of income and, for some landlords, an employer statement.

Check what the rent includes (service costs, furnishing, utilities) and whether the contract is for a fixed or indefinite period. A deposit is usually one to two months' rent and should be returned after you move out, minus documented damage.

Once you have a rental contract you can usually register at the municipality, which you need for your citizen service number (BSN), health insurance and a bank account.

Always read the contract carefully, and ask your agent if anything is unclear before you sign.
